Creme Brulee

Creme Brule

Yay, we made crème brulee for the BB's!

It was actually really simple and fast although in the end we were a little disappointed. Our "crème" was really eggie and Ian called it sweet scrambled eggs. Not something you particularly want to hear eh!

I wasn't sure how to caramelize the sugar because we didn't have a torch For days I searched all around the web and stores for a reasonably priced one but couldn't find any. Then when I had finally given up, one went on sale at good 'ol Canadian Tire so I asked someone to pick it up for me today. The moment I step into the house I opened the box to check out my new contraption and of course it needed butane.
Sigh, so my new gadget is still in the box and we had to experiment with the broiler. There was a little more "burning" than caramelizing but I think I have figured it out. Tomorrow I get to really go nuts with the torch on the last three brulees!

Recipe is here

You can stick the creme brulee under the broiler if you don't have a torch. Luckily, my husband is an engineer and had a big one in the garage! Your picture looks amazing and perfect!

I broiled mine too. The first one I burnt but after that I watched them more carefully. Fortunately I didn't put them all in at once and burn them all. Mine was a bit eggy but I didn't mind. Good luck with the torch, let us see how it comes out!

That looks delicious... I sooo love creme brulee that we got one of those burners ages ago, but I have to confess that I have never actually made them at home! How silly is that.. :) Yours inspires me to go and make one myself soon!

I think that top still looks pretty good!

Nice! Like the previous commenters, I've also been told the broiler works for caramelizing creme brûlées. But it's probably a lot more fun to scorch them by hand! I have yet to try making them, but they've been on my list for a long time!

Crême brulée is in my top 3 ultimate fave desserts. I have broiled in the oven too, works well. Nice to add little twists to it with flavours like lavender or star anise
